The Lands under Shadow
Also known as halflings, the hin are the smallest of the major races and one of the fastest growing (in numbers). They tend to resemble small human street urchins from a distance, but possess a light covering of hairy down over their entire bodies, most noticeably on the backs of their hands and their bare feet. Some male halflings possess beards, many do not. Skin and hair colouring are almost as varied as that of humans.
Hin communities are found everywhere, from single families in isolated farmsteads to large neighbourhoods in big human cities. They tend to prefer trade-oriented careers, although they are often assumed to be involved in underhand dealings, through unfair trade practices, fencing of stolen goods, direct larceny, or even involvement in local crime gangs. The “halfling thief” is a staple of popular literature across the Realms. This impression is not helped by their general attitude to life: which basically implies that everything will come to them in time, once the “biggers” have finally wiped themselves out.
Legend has it that there is a hin homeland in the far South; some of the more prejudiced humans shudder at the thought.
