The Lands under Shadow
Known across the Realms as the “Forgotten Folk”, gnomes are surprisingly common. They are a small, friendly race, less stocky than dwarves, to whom they are often assumed to be related. Male gnomes grow beards, which they keep full and near, while females do not. Gnomes tend to be very dextrous and quick-witted, delighting in intricate mechanisms and clever illusions. Rock Gnome wizards were influential among the magic schools of Myth Drannor.
Rock Gnomes are, by far, the most commonly encountered, with enclaves in most large towns and cities, where they dominate many crafts. Families of wandering “tinkers” are also encountered following the routes of the Gur and trading in repairs and small trinkets. The faces of Rock Gnomes, regardless of age, are always lined, so that they appear to be carved from wood, an impression exaggerated by their brown skin.
Forest Gnomes are rarely seen, even around Cormanthor, but are generally smaller than their cousins and lack the wrinkled skin. They have strong ties to the local fairies and frequently associate with brownies, dryads and other such beings.
